What is the difference between perimenopause and menopause?
Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when her ovarian function is ceased and production of estrogen is gone. This is usually defined for a woman after she has gone a year without a period. Labs are helpful to understand if a woman is menopausal but not always necessary.
Perimenopause is the time leading up to menopause and the hallmark is inconsistent or erratic production of hormones by the ovary. The hormone fluctuations is the cause behind heavy and irregular periods that occur during the perimenopausal time.
How do I know I am in menopause?
If you have not had a cycle in more than a year you are considered post menopausal. Being “in menopause” can mean a lot of different things. If you are having symptoms of menopause then you might be in the menopausal transition.
How long does menopause last?
The transition can last for years for many women. Hot flashes can last on average 7.5 years.
How can I manage menopause symptoms?
Seek care with a menopausal specialist to identify the best treatment options for you. Lifestyle modifications can improve the menopausal journey as well.
Will menopause affect my sex life?
The loss of sex hormones can impact our desire for sex, how we experience sex in terms of arousal and how sex feels due to changes in our vaginal tissue. Sexual health is influenced by many factors and the changes at menopause is a large contributor.
Are there non-hormonal treatments for symptoms?
Yes, we have more and more options outside of hormones that provide relief to women. One area of investigation are the KNDy neurons, located in the brain which are influenced by the loss of estrogen that occurs at menopause. Non-hormonal treatments of hot flashes and night sweats target these KNDy neurons.
Is menopause the same for everyone?
No! Not every woman will experience menopause the same. Experiences differ by ethnicity, lifestyle and age of menopause. Your best indicator is your mother or your sister. Not one menopausal journey is the same necessitating the need for individualized care!
